Commissioning FAQs

Is bespoke jewellery something for me?

‘Bespoke’ really just means something that’s designed and created specifically for you. Bespoke jewellery could be something extra special to mark an occasion but could equally be a piece that is made because you perhaps can’t find exactly what you are looking for ‘off the shelf’. I’ll always work closely with you to interpret your requirements and develop your design, whilst keeping mindful of your timescale and budget.

I firmly believe that commissioning a piece of bespoke jewellery can and should be for anyone and everyone.

What can you make?

I really enjoy taking on commission work and previously I’ve made engagement rings and wedding bands, christening gifts, memorial jewellery, landmark birthday heirlooms, anniversary sets for couples and retirement pieces.

Because I love the challenge of creating uniquely personal pieces of jewellery, I am willing to consider almost anything so, whether we’re starting from scratch or remodelling an existing piece you already own, I’m excited to hear your ideas.

How do I commission a piece of bespoke jewellery?

Usually, the process will start with an informal chat either in person, on the phone or via Zoom where we can talk together about whether it is to be a new piece or a remodel of an old or unworn jewellery item. I’ll ask questions to determine your ideas, inspiration and style as well as determining your timeline and budget.

Following this, I would then put together some design ideas for you to select from and once you’ve selected a design I provide you with a detailed estimate, my Commissions Policy and a date for the piece to be completed.

On approval of the quote, you will be asked to pay a 50% deposit which confirms acceptance of the estimate and the terms of my policy and I will then order the materials and get started on your bespoke piece.

How do I know what my jewellery will look like?

You will have accepted an initial design brief when paying the 50% deposit to secure your commission and my services. Sometimes however, and more so with the remodelling of old jewellery, designs need to be adapted or changed.

My way of working is very fluid and as a result, pieces do evolve throughout the production process. It is not always possible to show an exact 2D design of the finished piece at the start of a project. I will however, ask for approval or opinion if adaptations need to be made, sharing photographs and progress reports with you throughout the making of your jewellery so that you remain informed, aware and involved.

Please be assured, over the years, I have built a reputation for being able to capture the personality and essence of the recipient in my commission work. If you choose me to make your bespoke jewellery, it is because you will have connected with my style, ethos and personality and will, I hope, trust me to make you a beautiful piece of jewellery.

Once the piece has been completed, I will request the final balance payment and then arrange postage or delivery to you.

How much does it cost to commission a bespoke piece?

Every commission that I take on is designed and crafted by myself in my South Devon studio and commissions can be made to suit all tastes and budgets. Typically, prices start at around £150 but I am also able to produce smaller scale projects if you’d like to discuss something with me.

How long does it take?

Generally, I suggest that you allow up to 8 weeks for bespoke commissions which allows for additional services (should they be required) and hallmarking. We all know that sometimes, we can’t plan that far ahead so I can of course, work to shorter deadlines if necessary.
