Opal Brooch

This piece is really rather special as it was made as a commission for me!

I have always loved opals and really couldn’t resist buying this beautiful square cut Ethiopian Welo Opal at a gem fair some time ago. My original intention had been to make it into a dress ring but I knew I wouldn’t get to wear it that often and I also wanted to set myself a challenge to make a multifunctional piece of jewellery so this design seemed the perfect solution.

Capturing the essence of Deco and the Arts and Craft Movement

I have always loved everything about the 1920s and the Art Deco period. Geometric patterns which can be so simple but complex in their proportions were used in everything from couture, textiles, furniture, architecture and jewellery and I believe that these iconic patterns and motifs have stood the test of time and are also refreshingly contemporary.

My interpretation also reflects the Arts and Crafts movement which promoted a simplicity of design as well as a firm emphasis on hand crafted fabrication.

Following these influences, I gave as much thought as I could to designing the construction and functionality of the piece to fit the style and ethos of the period.

The brooch has a detachable chain which also allows it to be worn as a necklace and subsequently the brooch pin is positioned so as not to be seen when it is worn on the chain. In fact, particular attention is always paid to how the back of the piece of jewellery looks as, being tactile objects that are held in the hand as well as being worn, I feel it is equally as important.

A very personal commission

This was the first piece of jewellery that I designed and made for myself and I’m really very pleased with my personal commission and wear it a lot – most often as a brooch but occasionally with the chain. I particularly love how the warmth and smooth shine of the 18 carat gold sets off the colour flashes in the really stunning opal which in turn contrasts against the textured surface of the silver.
